Historically speaking

On this day in 1989, the Berlin Wall came down.
---------

By eerie coincidence (to me, anyway) November 9 is also considered by many to be the beginning of the Holocaust, as 9 Nov. 1938 marked the beginning by Nazi storm troopers of invading Jewish neighborhoods, taking their belongings, and shipping them off to concentration camps.

  1. That timing is very eerie.

I remember the time very well because I left the UK to go and live in Paris in the summer of 1990. Before that at work I noticed someone had a postcard pinned up on a board. It was from Berlin, one of those completely black ones, "Berlin at night". I was impressed that anyone would be holidaying in Berlin so soon after the wall came down but disappointed that they should have chosen one like that. I wish I'd pinched it, all the same.

  3. @A. - You've been to Paris? How are we supposed to keep you down on the farm, once you've see Paree?

I'm sure the card was just on sale. As you might imagine. Out with the old. You should have.

    Summer of 1990, eh?

@Jeff King - It was hard to believe, all right.
