Cold and other facts

It has been really cold where I live lately. We have had two stretches of below zero temperatures and it was -17 F. again last night. So, I was wondering what the record cold has been over the years. -17 is not even close for us, so I better just be happy and pay my heating bill, I guess. Other fun facts about individual states, link at the bottom of this post.

More facts about the states.

  1. Thanks for a list of states I'll avoid living in. -70? -66?

  2. Remind of this if I ever plan to visit Wyoming with my time machine set to winter, 1933.

  4. Even Florida! Even Hawaii!

So now you've sent me off on a wild goose chase trying to find out the records for this part of the world: Kent's coldest ever official temperature was recorded at Elmstone (east of Canterbury): -6 ºF /-21.3 ºC on 29/30th January 1947. The lowest ever was -27.2 in Scotland, but you sort of expect it up there.

Sigh. Have you any idea how much time I've wasted when I could have been doing something productive?

  5. Bear in mind, A, that the Hawaii temperature was a temperature at the top of a mountain in Hawaii, more than 4 km in elevation. I'd guess it was a bit warmer in the lowlands.

  6. According to wikipedia, every 1000 m of elevation equates with about 6.5 deg C drop in temperature [I love how they use metric]. If I use that as an estimate, the 12 deg F at the top of the mountain equates with about 60 deg F down below.

    That's my kind of winter.

  7. Hi Max
I thought of you when I heard on CNN what the temps were going to be in your area and I felt very sorry for you. Were you housebound for a few days? Regards

  8. @Stephanie Barr - Not much of an argument for global warming, metric or no. :)

@Soubriquet - You can visit Wyoming anytime in winter and freeze your time machine off. Fer shur.

@Jeff King - Ski Utah! Isn't that what your license plates say? :)

@A. - Hey, this is productive stuff. Time well spent. :)

@Frostygirl - Naw, I wasn't housebound. I left the water running a few nights though. Thank you for your sympathy, though - seeing as how it's summertime where you live. :)
