Real Characters

I don't read that much fiction anymore, but have read a book or two in my time. This post is about some of the characters in a few of those books. See if you can match the characters to the books and also (for extra credit?) name the authors. Caution: the characters may or may not be the MAIN character.

1. Holly Golightly

2. Captain Ahab

3. Tom Joad

4. Sofie Western

5. Friday

6. Jack Dawkins

7. Jim Hawkins

8. Edmond Dantes

9. Atticus Finch

10. Lara Antipova

Oh! Too EASY, Drill Sgt! Is that what you say? Is it? Ok, try these on for size, smarties:

  2. A got everything I would have gotten and then some. Except 13. Ones I knew:

1, 2, 5 (though I would have, of course, assumed the classic Heinlein book Friday), 8 & 10. I would have guessed Watership Down for 13 and I think I would have gotten 20.

O' course, now I have to do this, too.

  4. as I'm late to the party, I'll just do the ones you didn't already give answers for...
11.jim casey was in John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath.
12.Santiago is the old man, the one with the sea, Hemingway.
13.Ginger and Merrylegs are equine characters in Black Beauty, which my sister read and re-read a million times. out loud, to me. What a crummy book. No pirates at all. Anna Sewell.
14, Humbert Humbert...oh dear. The poor sad man who is obsessed with Lolita. Vladimir Nabokov. Vlad's autobiographical tome, "Speak, Memory." is well worth a read. Vlad, apparently, didn't want to publish Lolita. I read it at college, can recall the long arguments we had about it. It's fair to say that most people who talk of Lolita have never read the book. And no. Seeing the movie of a book does NOT count.
    15. Yossarian, central character and kingpin of the superb Catch-22, by Joseph Heller
    16. I'm not sure if he was an Oliver, but Mellors, the naughty man, was the lover of Lady Chatterley. D.H. Lawrence.
    17. Nick Papadakis? Got me beat here, was he one of Zorba's pals?
    18. Ashley Wilkes was a southern gentleman in Gone with the Wind, um, Scarlet O Hara was lusting after him whilst Rhett Butler lusted after her.
Who wrote it? Um? er? No idea.
    19. R.P.Mc Murphy...Hard to see him without seeing jack Nicholson. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey. I read the book AFTER seeing the film, which I regret, wish i'd done it the other way round.
20.Mister Rochester, Jane Eyre, by Currer Bell.
The writer and her sisters... and bad-to-the-bone brother Bramwell lived only a few miles away from where I'm writing this.

  5. just read the next post through with clues. The two I didn't know... gone with the flatulence was Margaret Mitchell, of course.
Which leaves Nick Papadopolous to be a character in something bu James M.Cain. Still no idea, I don't think I've ever read anything by a James M. Cain.
