The long and short of it

William Henry Harrison was president of the U.S. for the shortest time, but he delivered the longest inaugural address at 105 minutes. Unfortunately, he spoke so long he contracted pneumonia and died a month later.

He was president from March 4 to April 4, 1841. Nothing notable happened during his presidency (except that he died.)

His Vice-President John Tyler served out his term and then was defeated when he ran on his own. Tyler was the youngest president up to that point whereas Harrison had been the oldest.

Harrison may have been related to Count Dracula. Or Bob Crachit.

  1. So there you have it, the complete answer: talk less, live longer, and keep Princess's attention into the bargain.

  2. As the old saying goes, if you have nothing to say, go ahead and say it anyway.

    At least that's always been my blogging style.

  3. He has nothing on the world record holder for the longest speech. 27hrs and the guy who gave it is still going strong. Your theory is therefore nullified.

  4. Well, actually, if we're going to get into world records and split hairs, 27 hours is nowhere near the world's longest speech which is reputed to be over 124+ hours, about Salvador Dali. The mind boggles. However, the speech by Harrison was the world's longest inaugural address. A different thing, thankfully, and quite bad enough.

  7. @A. - I can't talk less. I only put a tiny portion of my output on this blog. You would be amazed!

    @Descartes - My philosophy too. I guess you must have noticed. But I will soon think of something to say. :)

    @Princess - Who is giving a 27-hour speech? I haven't heard about that.

    @A. - Harrison probably droned on about all the good things he was going to do for the country. Too bad. On the other hand, politicians who die early in their terms are a gift. :)

    @Ettarose - I've been meaning to talk to you about that. I know you have a lot of blogs to visit, but you have been neglecting your roots. :)

    @Alison - Don't give up. I am about to think of something interesting to blog about. Promise. :)

    @Sheila - !@#$%^&*(!!

    What's the exclamation supposed to mean? It was the truth. He was our shortest-term president. You have to admire somebody like that. :)

    I think I spy an "off" in there! I am mortally wounded.
