Both Sides Now

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
Its cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
---------

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
Its love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
---------

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say I love you right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
Its life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

  2. Ah those happy carefree days of youth! How about a couple of verses of Send in The Clowns next? Or maybe Those Were The Days?

  3. Those were the days my friend
    We thought they'd never end...

For some reason I have that song inextricably associated with "Do you remember an inn, Miranda?" and every time I hear the song I think of the fleas that tease in the high Pyrenees. Similar sentiments I suppose. Roughly.

  4. Joni Mitchell records, my college soundtrack (well, Joni and Steely Dan and some other things)- Blue especially. My friend and I used to sit around singing along to Blue (probably to the dismay of the other hall residents!) But so much fun!

  5. I love that song. I used to play "Send in the Clowns" on the piano (@Descartes) I miss my piano. Now all I would play would be the blues.

  6. @Sheila - Yes you can. Try.

@Descartes - Those were the DAYS my friend, we thought they'd never end, we'd sing and dance forEVer and a day. We'd live the life we'd choose,we'd fight and NEver lose, those were the days or yes those were the days!

(Don't confuse this with the Archie Bunker theme, please.)

@A. - No more rations of grog for you tonight.

@Lidian - Well look what kind of post it takes to make missy L show up! I can just picture you sitting on your dorm room floor in a circle with this huge jug of wine none of you were used to drinking and besmirching the good name of Joni Mitchell. For shame. No, I'm sure you did her proud. :)

@Ettarose - I would love to hear you play piano. Blues or anything else.

  7. I remember "Those Were the Days". I was singing it before I started actually doing any of that stuff. It was hope for the future.
